Your dental surgeon will want more specific information about your current and past oral health issues. Your complete medical history, as well as details on drug allergies, previous surgeries and current health conditions will be reviewed. The team will also need to know about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take. Be sure to have all this information readily available for your initial consultation.

Next, an exam is performed by inspecting the mouth, teeth, gums and jaw to better understand your oral health situation. You may need diagnostic imaging tests, as X-rays or 3D scans to help in planning and performing your procedure. Your surgeon may also require a dental impression of one or both jaws, which simply involves you biting down on a special tray for a few minutes.

Once your diagnostic information has been reviewed, a treatment approach is chosen by discussing the surgery details, including how to prepare for the procedure and what expect during recovery. At this point, you’ll also go over your sedation and anesthesia options. Oral surgeries may require general anesthesia, but in most cases deep IV sedation is chosen, which will allow you to sleep the entire duration of the procedure.
